Short answer: do not count on it. Morocco does not offer a routine visa on arrival. The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists a “visa issued at the border” among its visa types, but only for exceptional cases, decided by the security services at the border post. If your nationality needs a visa, get it before you travel.
What the official rules say
Morocco issues four types of entry visa: short-stay, long-stay, transit and a visa issued at the border. According to the Ministry’s consular portal, the border visa is a short-stay or transit visa that the security services may issue in some exceptional cases. The portal does not say who qualifies.
Your options before you travel
| Your situation | What you need | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Your nationality is visa-exempt | Nothing beyond a valid passport | — |
| Your nationality needs an AEVM | A travel authorisation | Online, see Morocco eTA (AEVM) |
| You are eligible for the eVisa | An eVisa: 770 MAD, 3 business days, or 1,100 MAD express, 1 business day | Online, see how the eVisa works |
| You need an embassy visa | A visa from a Moroccan embassy or consulate | The consulate that covers where you live |
Many travellers who need an embassy visa with their passport alone can use the eVisa instead if they live in, or hold a visa from, a listed country such as the UK, the US or the Schengen area. See the eVisa with a Schengen, UK or US visa or residence permit. To find out which row applies to you, see Morocco visa rules by nationality.
If there is no Moroccan embassy in your country
The consular portal explains what to do when Morocco has no embassy or consulate where you live. Apply to the Moroccan mission accredited to your country, or to an honorary consul. If neither exists, the request goes to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rabat for a visa to be issued at the airport. This is arranged before you travel; it is not a visa you request on arrival.
Transit through Morocco
A transit visa lets you cross Moroccan territory on the way to another country. It covers one or two transits of up to 72 hours each. Like other visas, it may be issued at the border only in exceptional cases, so arrange it in advance if your nationality needs one.
Two rules to remember
- You cannot change visa type after arrival. The type of a visa cannot be changed once you are in Morocco; a new visa has to be requested from your country of residence.
- Carry your eVisa from the start of the journey. The authorities ask eVisa holders to show it when boarding, on arrival and during their stay if checked.
